AstraZeneca has agreed to pay $5bn (£2.3bn) for misleading marketing and promotion claims about the anti-depressant Strattera. The company, which is based in London, is in the process of completing a study on the drug.
The drug, known generically as atomoxetine, was originally launched in the UK in 2003 and became available as a generic in 2006.
The research was led by a team led by Prof Andrew Geddes, an associate clinical professor at University College London and head of the research team.
He said: “Strattera has been in the news for its potential to cause a number of serious side effects, particularly in patients who are taking other medications. The current investigation is currently under way and we expect to see results in the near future.
“The company will continue to work closely with other companies to develop, manufacture and market its new drug as part of our continuing commitment to make sure it is effective and safe.
“Our focus is on finding a balance between profits and patient safety, and that is our ultimate goal.”
Strattera is known as a ‘generic’ version of the drug, which means it has the same active ingredient as its brand-name counterpart and can be used safely to treat ADHD. It has also been shown to help people with insomnia, panic attacks and other mental health conditions.
Atomoxetine is the brand name for the active ingredient Strattera, which belongs to a group of medicines called selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. These medicines help to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety and to reduce the risk of suicidal thoughts in people with autism and other mental health conditions.

The company will also conduct a follow-up study in September to see if Strattera will cause more serious side effects, such as suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, agitation, anxiety, depression, paranoia, insomnia, difficulty sleeping and more.
The company said that the study was done in two parts: one to investigate the effects of atomoxetine on the serotonin transporter, and the other to determine whether Strattera causes greater increases in serotonin levels than the brand-name drug did.
Atomoxetine was originally developed as an antidepressant, but the drug was discovered to have a similar mechanism of action to its brand-name counterpart. The drug was patented in 1961 and has since become widely available and widely used.
AstraZeneca is set to complete a study on the drug, which will take place in early 2019. The study will involve more than 200,000 people with different forms of schizophrenia, depression and anxiety.The researchers said that their findings were “consistent with the data presented in this study”, and that their study had not had a positive impact on their research.
Dr Geddes said that the company had no plans to stop developing its study because of the research delays and other challenges. “We hope that the new study will allow us to further improve the quality of our research,” he said.
The researchers are continuing their research to test its safety, efficacy and tolerability in people with ADHD.
